Nissan Diesel is strengthening its position as one of South Africa’s leading extra heavy truck manufacturers with the recent launch of its new Quon range. The Quon model range has evolved from the foundations laid by its durable and respected predecessor, the UD440. Gross vehicle mass (GVM) is up to 65 000 kg. Besides its modern styling, Quon’s true success starts in the cabin with its emphasis on safety, comfort and enhanced visibility. The Nissan Diesel GE13TD engine is a 13-litre in-line six-cylinder turbocharged intercooled engine. This is a EURO2 standard engine that offers a more environmentally friendly option as it was manufactured according to stringent exhaust emission specifications. This powerful engine produces a maximum output of 340 kW at 1 800 rpm and maximum torque of 2 225 Nm at 1 200 rpm. The engine’s turbocharger is boreless, which reduces high stress in that area and ultimately enhances the vehicle’s reliability. It has an electronic engine management system as well as an engine exhaust brake as standard. Transmissions The ZF-16S 221 OD 16-speed synchromesh gearbox is used in the UD460 WT. This transmission has a low range interlock system with synchro protection that prevents the driver from changing to low range above a speed of 25km/h. The 460WT has a single plate clutch, and to replace it costs much less. It is air/ hydraulically assisted and allows for automatic adjustment. The range of trucks is available at BB Truck and Tractor in Polokwane.
