Ten lives lost in two days
Ten people died, one person was critically injured and 11 other sustained minor injuries in two different high-impact collisions in Polokwane over the weekend.
In the first collision, which occurred at around 05:30 on Saturday morning along the Modjadjiskloof road, four vehicles were involved and five people died with 11 others sustaining minor injuries.
The injured people were taken to Mankweng, Pietersburg and Lebowakgomo provincial hospitals where they were treated and released.
Only one person was admitted. The drivers of three of the four vehicles as well as two passengers died. According to collision reconstruction expert, Mr Phillip Smit, a taxi was allegedly passing a camper van that was towing a Suzuki on a solid line when it collided with an oncoming lorry.
The impact slammed the lorry into the oncoming camper van. The driver of the taxi was Mr Bongani Simelani (26) and one of his passengers who died was an as yet unidentified 18-year-old woman from Giyani. The driver of the lorry, which belongs to Oakley, was Mr Jack Sibanda (36).
The driver of the camper van was Mr Johny du Randt.
His wife, Hettie, was a passenger and was also killed. Du Randt was a well-known businessman from Polokwane and also did a short stint as town clerk in his time.
